Calculate Your Body Mass Index (BMI)
Body Mass Index (BMI) is used to assess cardiovascular disease risk and reflects a person's weight relative to their height. A BMI which falls above or below the normal weight range is often linked to an increased health risk. Used in conjunction with other measures such as blood pressure, cholesterol and waist circumference, BMI can provide a reasonable overview of a person's potential health risk. Because BMI cannot distinguish between lean muscle mass and body fat (meaning some people with a lot of muscle may have a BMI in the overweight or obese category), it is not recommended to use BMI alone to assess health risk.

BMI Categories
- Underweight (BMI < 18.5kg/m2)
Whilst people with a BMI of below 18.5kg/m2 are generally considered to have a low amount of body fat they, like their overweight and obese counterparts can be at an increased health risk. Although large amounts can pose a risk to our health, a certain amount of body fat is essential for good health. For more information on the important role fats play in our diet click here.
- Healthy Weight Range (BMI of 18.5 - 24.9kg/m2)
People with a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9kg/m2 are considered to be in the healthy weight range and usually have a lower health risk when compared to people in the other BMI categories. A nutritionally balanced diet and regular exercise can help you maintain a BMI within this range.
- Overweight (BMI of 25 - 29.9kg/m2)
People with a BMI between 25 and 29.9kg/m2 fall into the overweight category and are generally considered to be at an increased health risk. If you are already a fairly active/athletic person and have a balanced diet then this result may indicate a high amount of muscle mass as opposed to fat mass and in this case BMI alone should not be used to determine potential health risk.
If however you are not regularly engaging in physical activity and/or are consuming a high fat diet then you may well be at an increased health risk. By making some simple lifestyle changes now you may be able to reduce your current and future health risk. For more information on incorporating regular exercise into your life contact us or for dietary advice visit the Dietitians Association of Australia.
- Obese (BMI ≥ 30kg/m2)
If you fall into the obese category with a BMI of 30kg/m2 or more you are far more likely to have significantly increased health risk with research showing a greater incidence and risk of conditions such as diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart disease in this group of people. By making some simple changes to your diet and exercise habits you can achieve positive results and lower your current and future health risk.
